Drive inland through rural Sri Lanka toward the Cultural Triangle. Optional stops at a spice garden and Dambulla's giant Buddha. Arrive in Sigiriya by afternoon; sunset from a nearby viewpoint. Overnight in Sigiriya.

Early climb up Sigiriya Rock Fortress (5th-century royal citadel, UNESCO) beating both heat and crowds. Afternoon at leisure — options include the Dambulla Cave Temple, a village lunch with bullock cart and catamaran ride, or nearby Pidurangala Rock. Overnight in Sigiriya.

Scenic drive via Matale to Kandy, Sri Lanka's hill-country cultural capital. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and attend the evening puja ceremony. Optional Kandyan cultural dance show. Overnight in Kandy.

Climb into the tea country. Stops at a working tea factory and plantation, Ramboda or Devon waterfalls, and the colonial hill station of Nuwara Eliya ("Little England"). Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.

Optional world-famous scenic train ride from Nanu Oya to Ella through the tea hills — your chauffeur meets you at the other end with luggage. Afternoon hike to the Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak viewpoint. Overnight in Ella.

Descend from the hills toward Sri Lanka's dry southeast. Optional stop at Ravana Falls and Buduruwagala rock-cut Buddhas. Arrive in the Yala / Tissamaharama safari region by afternoon. Overnight near the park.
